Bowen Youth Film Gala - Friday June 27, 7:30 pm

Bowen Youth Film Gala

Friday June 27, 2008
7:30 pm

Collins Hall, Bowen Island

Make your way over to Collins Hall, Friday June 27 at 7:30 for a memorable evening of short films crafted by our island’s young people. The range of films is quite remarkable: Lego stop-motion animation, comedies, international documentaries shot in Ireland and Nepal, imagistic poetry, dramas, whew! Our kids are such a creative bunch! Organized by Silvaine Zimmermann and the usual suspects on the board of directors this is a showcase full of surprises and remarkable depth and may be the start of an annual event. Bring your budding young film-maker along to be inspired by the productions of their island chums; maybe their films will grace next year’s program.

Young film-makers whose projects are included will be given free admission and a certificate of participation. Please call 604-947-0450 to reserve seats, recommended for this screening.

The 2008 Bowen Youth Film Gala includes works by:
Andrew Cameron, Arthur Szabo, Austin Wrinch, Calder Stewart, Calum Cole, Clancy Sindlinger, Emily Allan, Emmett Sparling, Holly Kasaslan, Jake Bagshaw, Kailey Spear, Kyla Jameison, Lacey O'Neill, Lina Martin-Chan, Mariah Fleetham, Megan McPhee, Natasha When, Robyn de Zwart, Ruth Kasasian, Sam Spear, Susanne Curry, Taylor Milne, Tobin Sparling

You can get a taste of the Gala on YouTube with the trailer for Natasha When’s comedy, "Till Death Do Us Part" (caution, some coarse language). You can also visit Bowen TV after Tues June 24 to see an interview with the organizers.

The Youth Film Gala is the final event for our 2007-08 schedule. We thank our members for their support in making this a real turnaround year for the Film Society. In addition to bringing fine films to our Bowen audience, we have continued, without resorting to outright kidnapping, to attract film-makers (and even movie stars) from afar to present their films in our rustic auditorium.

This year we were honoured to host such luminaries as the directors of the critically acclaimed "King Corn"; Rupinder Nagra, the star of "Amal" who traveled from Toronto for the occasion; as well as local film-makers Jack Silberman and Len Gilday who brought personal perspectives to challenging content. It was a great year. Our new Fall schedule begins with a screening on Sat., Sept. 27.

Emotional Arithmetic - Saturday May 31, 7:30 pm

Emotional Arithmetic

Saturday May 31, 2008
7:30 pm

Collins Hall, Bowen Island

99 minutes, Rated 14A

In our troubled times of polarized politics and debilitating war, this extraordinary film (adapted from the novel by the late Matt Cohen) by Canadian director Paolo Barzman asks how we heal emotional wounds that linger after great upheaval. Portrayed by a masterful ensemble cast featuring Susan Sarandon, Christopher Plummer, Max von Sydow, Gabriel Byrne, and Roy Dupuis, the film’s characters gather in the idyllic locale of Quebec’s Eastern Townships to reflect upon another time when the world was in great peril. After being separated during the Second World War, three people must find the strength to face tragedy and reclaim the friendships that transformed their lives.

"... Emotional Arithmetic could never be replicated because it is a moment in time when the talent, the setting and the story came together perfectly." John Powell, Cineplex Entertainment

Shake Hands With The Devil

7:30 pm

Collins Hall, Bowen Island

113 minutes
14-A

The Bowen Island premiere of an extremely powerful film.

Canada’s involvement in the ill-fated U.N. peacekeeping mission in 1990’s Rwanda is one of this country’s most documented legacies, but this time it is brought to the screen by acclaimed Canadian director Roger Spottiswoode as a finely wrought drama based on Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire’s memoirs. Quebec superstar Roy Dupuis virtually transforms into Dallaire and gives a transcendent performance portraying the beleaguered general with great economy of expression. The opportunity to witness these crucial moments in Canadian history through the lens of dramatic reconstruction should not be missed.

113 mins. Rated 14A.
"Spottiswoode’s Devil is very well done ... as it shows us this astonishing chapter in world history, through the eyes of Dallaire himself." -- Matthew Hays, Montreal Mirror
We are pleased to have Bowen film maker Len Gilday -- who was working in Rwanda during the genocide crisis -- to introduce the film. Visit www.bowenfilm.com to view a trailer of the film.

The Italian

Saturday November 24, 2007
7:30 pm

Collins Hall, Bowen Island

99 minutes
PG-13

In his feature directorial debut, director Andrei Kravchuk addresses with intelligence and poignancy the urgent issue of illegal adoption in Russia, already a well-documented international crisis. Based on the true story of a small Russian boy abandoned in an orphanage who goes in search of his birth mother, The Italian offers insight into contemporary Russian life. Winner of the international film critics prize at the 2005 European Cinema Festival, the Crystal Bear at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival, and Russia's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards. In Russian with subtitles.

"There is something slightly magical about the lighting, almost as if this were a fantasy land from which (six-year-old) Vanya might actually make an escape. This sense of unreality, of magical thinking and wishing, carries the story and Vanya through a remarkable journey." Manohla Dargis, New York Times.
