Starting Out In The Evening

Saturday November 29, 2008
7:30 pm

Collins Hall, Bowen Island

111 mins. Rated PG.

Faithful in style and spirit to the award-winning novel of the same name by Brian Morton, this wise, observant, and exquisitely tacit chamber piece counteracts every academic-novel cliché in the book. Against the backdrop of Manhattan's changing literary and publishing world, aging novelist Leonard Schiller is asked by Heather Wolfe, a graduate student and budding literary critic, to agree to interviews. Throughout their encounters, the core theme of Schiller’s novels is unveiled – life is not designed for our comfort but for our struggle, for in struggle there is growth. Official selection for many international film festivals, this film was also selected as Winner of the National Board of Review Top Ten Independent Films 2007

"A rapturous, ruefully funny flight of sympathetic imagination. Featuring the first movie role for Frank Lagella that ranks with his best stage parts, it’s a rare kind of American movie." Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun

The Band's Visit

Saturday September 27, 2008
7:30 pm

Collins Hall, Bowen Island

87 minutes, Rated PG

Winner of thirty-six different awards from a variety of international film festivals, this film offers a glimpse into the basic humanity in Middle East communities. On an ordinary day, the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrives in Israel from Egypt for a cultural event, but find themselves stuck in a remote desert until morning without accommodations. As the band settles in as best it can, each of the members attempts to get along with the natives in their own way. What follows is a special night of quiet happenings and confessions as the band and the town impact each other in unpredictable ways. In English, Arabic and Hebrew with subtitles.

"[Writer/director Eran Kolirin's] picaresque humor and witty style are a joy to behold, as is his respect for all quirks of character." Michael Epp, Bowen Island Undercurrent

"…a warm and delightful take on cross-cultural relations proves that sometimes a light touch is just what's needed to address serious topics. Novice helmer Eran Kolirin has a playful eye for compositions and a fine touch with thespers…" Jay Weissberg, variety.com
